QUICK NOTES 13

Hello people! Just thought I’d drop you a note saying “Yes, I am alive!” I was on a ship for a few weeks but am back now. It is imperative that some of you guys help me with NPRs. I cannot possibly run them all, and need your help. Turn 12 is due Sept 15th(sorry about the delay again). Here’s a few goodies. Enjoy.

NEW  TECH  SYSTEMS

Autoloader(Au): Is 2 hs in size and must be mounted between the VLS and a Mg. This system reloads the VLS rapidly(2 turns). 15 MCr, 2,000 dev

Cascading Forcebeam Mount(FcB): Developed after the Reformation Group declared a state of emergency following the initial TFN attack into the Deuteronomy System, the Cascading Forcebeam Mount was built with substantial Tolat technical support. This devastating system was installed on front-line Reformation military units throughout the Insurrection and damaged or destroyed so many Federation warships that senior TFN military officials went out of their way to destroy Reformation ships which mounted these weapons. TL 12, forward facing only, 20,000

dev,  150 MCr, 6 hs in size. Same damage and range as the Cb. FcBs are restricted in the following way:

DD-none

BC-one

BB-two

DN-two

SD-three

MT-three

SM-four

Core Tap(CrT): The single largest engineering system ever built, the CrT was designed by the Rishatha Imperium during the 8th Interregional Conflict and is installed primarily on it’s large warp assault units(ie beam combatants). It’s phenominal size and cost limits this system to only the largest Rishatha fleet units. Built at the core of a warship and tapping into the higher energy states of subspace, the Core Tap increases beam damage by 50%! 500 MCr, 35 hs in size, 35,000 dev cost. TL 12

Depolarizer(DpO): A unique breakthrough in beam and anti-drive weaponry, the DpO was developed as a small-scale technology demonstration program by the Rishatha during the Imperium’s worst revenue slump and continuing budget cuts in nearly 30 decades. A system seen as critical to the Imperium’s drive to upgrade it’s defense capability following the devastating Horune conflict, the Depolarizer was installed on the newly built Tiamat-class battlemoons and some front-line supermonitors. Each hit destroys one engine(one I), not ROOM!  Fires every other turn, 6 hs in size, 150 MCr, TL10, 15,000 to develop. Max 15 hexes range.

Drone Fighters(Fr1): Basically a highly intelligent cruise missile, the First Generation Robot Fighter(Fr1) is a VERY stealthy platform(unable to been detected until it is within 20 tactical hexes). The brilliant Tolat engineering skills allow the Fr1 to move at speed 14 and carry four fighter weapons. These fighters are NOT manned, are allowed to be carried by non-carriers, and can be used as a CSP to defend other vessels. Low cost(35MCr) was a necessity because of the high threat environment(TL17) limits to survivability of fighters. Drone fighters have a remarkable turn mode(zero!) and three Fr1 can be carried per V. Robot fighters have a final, lethal use as well: they can ram, inflicting terrible damage(15 pts each). They are also highly maneuverable(-2 to be struck).

Laser Ball Turrets(La): The decision by Admiral Laz Hernandez(Head of Reformation BuShips) to install the La system on newly-built ships proved critical in the disastrous Invasion of Li-Po. Desperate to stop the vicious Rebel Triumvirate assault against it’s allied planets, the Reformation Group assembled a large assault fleet, including four Roughneck-class dropships. Fighting it’s way through the Triumvirate fleet, the Reformation forces orbited Li-Po and began landing Drop Commandos, without realizing the substantial planetary defenses were well hidden and awaiting just that action. As the Reformation troops began their orbital assault, the Li-Po defenses opened fire. Stealthed orbital satellites mounting modified anti-fighter autocannon instantly wiped out nearly twelve Reformation fighter groups, crippling the front-line strikewave and throwing the fighter jocks into disarray. In the resulting action, the Reformation fleet was decimated as planetary defense missiles, fighters, and orbital weapons platforms reigned havoc on the unprepared Reformation forces. Only the laser ball turrets on the Roughneck-class dropships(and their crack Marine gunners) enabled these ships to break off with only moderate damage and retreat to the WP, carrying nearly 8,000 Marines to relative safety. Triumvirate fighter groups went after the dropships with a vengeance but again the La systems beat back their assaults, inflicting heavy fighter losses before the Warlord of Li-Po recalled them. 6,000 dev, 15 Mcr each, 360 degree fire, 1 hs each, two points of laser damage each! TL9 and 8 hex range!

Singlebeams(Sb): The decision by the Thranx to install the forcebeam-like singlebeams and their subsequent use on smaller warships(esp. the older DD platforms) resulted in old-style PT-boat tactics and victorious battles against the larger Rish fleets. TL 7, two hull spaces each, 35 MCr, 5,000 developement, double forcebeam damage(ie 2 hs Sb= 4 pts of forcebeam damage). Single hex row mount(forward facing only), limited number(3 x’s turn mode).

Skhval-class Torpedoes(To:S): A very close-in weapons system, the Skhval-class torpedo was used to good effect by the Thranx against the Rishatha fleets that continually battered at the Thranx system defenders. A single hull space is size, each Skhval-class torpedo does three points of damage and cannot be shot down by point defense. Developement: 10,000, cost each, 3 MCr for the torpedo, 15 MCr for the launching silo, same range and to-hit as the fR. Reload as XO Racks. A single-shot sprint-mode short-range torpedo. The silo is Ss on the control Sheet of a ship. TL9.

Torpedo - Class-B (To:B): The standard torpedo, each costs 3 MCr. 3,000 dev

Torpedo Launcher(TLa): A Daa’Vit system, the Torpedo Launcher was developed during the war with the Rishatha Imperium. It costs 50 MCr, is three hs in size, and fires a highly modified SBM. Due to this modification, the SBM is no longer considered as such. TLa’s fire every other round and torpedoes have the same range of a SBM, and does two points of damage, -2 to be hit, and is a Daa’Vit system only. TL8, 6,000 dev

Vertical Launch System(VLS): During the devastating 7th Interregional Conflict between the Arachnid Omnivoracity and the Rishatha Imperium, senior Rish Warmothers pressed for the development of a more capable missile launcher, and BuWeaps responded with the Vertical Launch System. Basically a large missile magazine, the VLS system can fire a large number of missiles rapidly, and reloading is relatively fast(two turns) using the Autoloader or 10 turns without one!  However, a single hit on this system disables the VLS, until repairs are effected. TL10 system. 20 hs in size, 100 MCr, 12,000 to develop. Due to limited fire control, the VLS has the following targeting restrictions:

FIRE  EVERY  TURN

SM                  12

CM                  8

SBM                8

CAM               8

ADM               6

The VLS can be modified to carry CDs, AFMs, EDMs, RDs, or mines. The VLS system can carry  the following number of missiles:

SM                  24

CM                  14

SBM                10

CAM               8

ADM               6

Ie, a Rish battlecruiser with a single VLS can carry 6 ADMs or 8 CAMs, only.

The Alpha-Synth War

The Alpha-Synth War, a far-flung conflict between the Rishatha Imperium and the Kittani Federation, began as a minor skirmish in a strategic backwater system deep within Imperial space. At the time, the ponderous Rishatha Imperium hadn’t explored beyond it’s borders in decades. The Eighth Interregional Conflict had left the Imperium Navy in shambles as genocidal battles between Rish and Horune forces culminated in the obliteration of the militant Horune race. Gradually, the Imperium Navy was rebuilt and exploration continued. Rish fleet units stumbled onto the Kittani in System 306, a barren and useless star system far inside Rishatha borders. From the scant records of the era, the Rish Warmother apparently panicked when an ultramodern Kittani battleship transited a warp point barely five light-seconds from her forces, which consisted of six light cruisers and twenty-four explorer ships. Shooting began immediately on both sides, but the Rishatha ships were no match for the advanced Kittani vessel. Although the Rishatha ships were equipped with GML batteries, these missiles were completely ineffective against the Kittani point defense system, which appeared to be comprised of mini-black holes. Likewise, the cruiser hetlasers were useless against the Kittani battleship as it was cloaked in a large black sphere, which absorbed all weapons fire without apparent damage. As the Kittani black globe intermittently dropped, rapid-fire capital missiles with devastating protomatter warheads, demolished the Rishatha fleet and only the Rish courier drones survived the brief battle.

At the Homeworld, the Rish Warmothers conferred, realizing that they were totally outclassed by this new high-tech foe. Even so, the Rishatha Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) was sent immediately to the threatened sector. Leading this fleet was twelve mammoth supermonitors, the most devastating ship class in Known Space. Although the supermonitors totally outsized every other vessel encountered during the conflict, the Kittani battleships had several overwhelming technologies, including the Black Globe, black-hole point defense, advanced capital missile launchers, protomatter warheads, and very advanced speed and maneuverability. Additional scans of Kittani vessels revealed almost no crew on board these warships. In fact, if believable, each Kittani battleship was piloted by a single individual! This implied either some super-advanced mentality on the part of the Kittani or artificial intelligence(AI).

The renown Rishatha Warmother Kay’mil led the fleet from the crack Yerema-class supermonitor Yar’yag. Three Teramo-class supermonitors and three Khoro-class Planetary Assault vessels were also assigned to lead the way. The Teramo-class vessels were designed as warp point assault units while the Yerema-class are a medium-range combatant. The Khoro-class vessels are able to land one hundred and fifty PCFs per ship, enabling the Rishatha to rapidly take enemy-held planets. Their large gunboat compliments provide devastating firepower in support of the PCFs as well as anti-warship and anti-fighter combat space patrols.

Warmother Kay’mil(a Rish who was a well-known fighter and hard taskmaster and who was highly admired and respected by her fellow officers and subordinates) was one of the Rishatha’s best fleet admirals. She was also Commander-in-Chief of the RDF, which she used aggressively against the high-tech Kittani. Using both guile and luck, Kay’mil accomplished several astounding victories but in the Battle of System 307, her flagship was struck by nearly 50 protomatter warheads and destroyed, but Kay’mil survived and went on to win the battle. During the height of the fighting, the Kittani battleships closed to point-blank range of the Rish battleline, actually intermingling with Warmother Kay’mil’s forces. Kay’mil had been relying heavily on the firepower of her fighters, and when the Kittani realized this, they began targeting her carriers with ruthless efficiency.

After her flagship was destroyed, Kay’mil transferred to a badly damaged nearby battlecruiser, which was also partially disabled. She then noticed that the assault carrier RSS Re’geth was under heavy fire from a Kittani battleship. Lesser Warmother Rik’lan later wrote in her report: “Warmother Kay’mil then gave me the most courageous order I’ve ever heard”, “Commence fire on that battleship and draw her away from that carrier!” After a short slugfest with the battleship and despite Kay’mil’s daring intervention, the carrier was raked by hetlaser fire and destroyed. The enemy battleship also managed to get close enough to slam four close assault missiles into the battlecruiser RSS Gr’noal and score fifteen hits on the carrier RSS R’zeal. Disabled as she was, warmother Kay’mil’s battlecruiser literally outfought the Kittani battleship. After pounding the Kittani vessel until it’s guns were silenced, a Rish destroyer reduced the battleship to a virtual mass of molten wreckage and left dead in space. Rish forces continued heavy operations against the Kittani forces for several more weeks.

Although the Kittani Federation held a significant technical advantage over the Rishatha, they did not move deeper into Rish territory. The Rishatha, however, felt seriously threatened by this new high-tech power and proceeded to continue the conflict. The war did spread into the high-population Utena System (Haggai Sector) when another Kittani battleship accidently probed a closed warp point several weeks later. Hundreds of Rish orbital weapons platforms protected the planet and Rish fleet units were rushed forward. Wide-spread fighting took place in the Utena System as Rish supermonitors and carriers slugged it out with advanced Kittani battleships encased in impenetrable black globes.

When the ultimately powerful Rishatha Core Command was deployed to the Haggai Sector, it had a major impact on the actual battlezone. Rish forces recaptured the important Utena System following several days of fierce insystem fighting. The decisive moment came when the battlemoon RSS Hiammat closed to point-blank range of the Kittani Admiral’s battleship, destroying the vessel in a huge explosion and crippling Kittani morale.

The Kittani military offensive continued unabated however. When the Rishatha Rapid Deployment Force occupied the first Kittani system in the third year of the war, it triggered massive Kittani military operations to dislodge them.

In the end, however, the Kittani realized their error and sued for peace as overwhelming Rish battlefleets began to wear down the defenses of the Federation. The Rishatha Imperium had paid a high price for this outcome: sixteen stupendous supermonitors and nearly 600,000 soldiers had perished in the fighting.

Alpha-Synth Technology: Alpha-Synth technology is based on the super-advanced Kittani artificial intelligences. These ultra-modern battleships can not be properly run by organic beings, especially the black hole point defense system and Black Globe. Each Alpha-Synth battleship is run by a organic-inorganic pair, a single Kittani pilot(usually a fighter jock) and the AI. The pilot is ‘hardwired’ into the vessel using advanced cybernetics and hyper-heuristic softwear systems. The AI itself is a vast self-aware computer system comprising both hardware and software aspects. A very high tech level system, artificial intelligences usually go insane when first activated and as a result are very rare. AIs are critical components of the Alpha-Synth system.
