The Mak are a group of sentient aquatic life forms that evolved on the planet K’rell. The aquatic races known collectively as ‘The Mak’ all have a common denominator of a symbiotic creature known as K’rell. The K’rell, small shrimp sized beings evolved over many thousand of years. They were the first semi sentient life on K’rell.
They attached themselves to aquatic hosts for survival. Over time a dozen species of aquatic life gained a more rapid evolutionary change and sentience due to the K’rell symbiotic interface. This was an offshoot of the symbiotic bond, creating a better host for mutual survival.
The K’rell reproduced very slowly upon their own, mating with another K’rell. Over the centuries, both host and K’rell evolved to the point that the hosts reproduction was tied with that of the K’rell. When a host had a birth, a new K’rell was born as well within the young.
Although the K’rell are symbiots, they are remained a semi sentient being. The hosts however grew to full sentience. The Mak when are in close contact with another Mak can sense the other. It is theorized that this was a development to prevent K’rell predator host species from attacking/eating prey species who contained K’rell as well.
Mak who have had their K’rell die in accidents, if they themselves survive, suffer a form of brain damage, and revert to their primal and instinctual natures.
The Mak did come into conflict over the centuries with one another, but usually the K’rell were the common denominator that prevented the full scale war and slaughter common in histories of other worlds. Eventually the different and distinct Mak species created a council and worked together, naming themselves “The Mak”.
The Mak are ruled by a King, who is also the spiritual leader. When a King dies, a new one is selected by the Mak council. This has significant spiritual and religious meaning to the Mak. And the new King is usually one who’s host and K’rell are especially evolved or developed.
The Mak spread over their world, both in the teaming plentiful oceans, but also the few land masses as well.
The Mak are very ambitious and hard working. There is a type of competition under laying many social activities. While usually good natured and healthy, it is an off shoot of the instinctual competition between different species. Yes all Mak have a common bond of the K’rell, which keeps things in check, due to the natural reluctance to harm another K’rell. This has help foster a very rich and diversified merchant and trade atmosphere.
The Mak are a religious peoples, worshiping a great father K’rell who created all life. The King speaks for the great father K’rell to the people and guides them. The Mak have the one universal religion and no others are known to exist.
The Mak have always maintained a large semi active army the Kings Legions. This force while para military in nature, has a long history of working in the civilian sector as well providing security, public works projects, and aid and support during natural disasters. They are a well accepted organization by the people and are available for quick mobilization when needed.
